Lovejoy buys a collection of Islamic antiques from retired diplomat Harold Plumb, who warns him that by rights some of the collection should have gone to the Foreign Office.
He obtains his purchasing money from loan shark John Hill, putting up his daughter's flat as collateral, only to find the police on his trail and a visit to the Foreign Office disclosing the fact that Plumb is a con-man who stole the articles in question.
Helped by Charlotte, Lovejoy stages an extremely elaborate charade to get the deeds for the flat back from Hill.
