The play received poor press when opening in Chichester and ticket sales were at half capacity. The production received a major overhaul before opening in London and was cut by 18 minutes. One of the changes made was to cut the character of Caqueteur, played originally by Raymond Clarke. This was much to the annoyance of Edward Petherbridge who had been cast to take over the role and was thus left with only walk-on duties.
